* *** BINGPROCS TXT - 17 Dec 2010 10:43:12 - JKNAUTH Details about BootIt Next Generation (= BootIt NG = BING) can be found on the TeraByte Unlimited web site, www.terabyteunlimited.com, and in the "BootIt Next Generation: Installation and Getting Started" manual, www.terabyteunlimited.com/downloads/bootitng.pdf. The following sections describe the settings and procedures I use. Timeout: 7 Sound: Background: - Direct Boot Menu - Display DB Button ---------------------------------------------------- x Completion Alarm x Limit Primaries - Full Partition List - IT Mode - Virus Check - BootNow Support - Fix Swap x PATA CD Support - Use Volume Label - PATA IRQC (9) x Align on End - SATA-AHCI (1.2) x CHS Alternative - USB 2.0 Support - Align MBR End HS - IEEE 1394 Support - Align 2048 - CD Close Method Z x Make HD0 Active - Burn Extra Track - Keep HD Active - ClearSig Required x Use HD0 in BPB - ISO8601 Date/Time If the Limit Primaries option is not checked, BING allows more than four primary partitions for each hard drive. This can be very useful, but requires you to use ONLY BootIt NG for partition mangement, e,g,, do not add/delete/resize partitions with the Windows installation program or Disk Management. The non-BING tools do not understand more than four primary paritions; using such tools in that environment could easily corrupt the hard drive. For the following procedures it is assumed that BING has been installed in its own partition on a hard drive. If instead you are booting BING from a CD or diskette, select Maintenance on the "Floppy Disk Menu" prompt. A subset of the "BootIT NG" screen is then displayed and you can start from the third step in each of the procedures below, i.e., the step: In "BootIt NG", select Partition Work. These procedures describe how to back up and restore a Windows partition to/from DVDs or CDs. This can be done even if you have only a single partition in your system. Procedures are also described for doing a backup/restore to/from a file in a second hard drive partition, which could be on an external hard drive. The backup image file is significantly compressed. There are also procedures to copy one partition to another. The copy is an uncompressed and executable copy of the source file. In the following text, "WIN7" and "TEST" are names used for two primary partitions: a production and a test Windows partition. The specific partition names assigned are not important. It is assumed that two BING menu items have been set up as shown below. The names given to the menu items are also not important; those are the names displayed in the BING boot menu. I usually make the boot item name the same as the associated boot partition name, but that isn't necessary. MBR details for WIN7 menu item, 0: WIN7, 1: TEST (default) MBR details for TEST menu item, 0: TEST, 1: WIN7 Note there would be some other considerations if this were Windows XP instead of Windows 7. Fortunately, the Windows 7 boot system does not require those extra steps. Unfortunately, the way some manufacturers install Windows 7 (Dell puts the Windows boot files in their RECOVERY partition) there may be some other considerations if you are dealing with such a system. See jgkhome.name/PC_Info/BING_WIN7_Dell.htm. Sometimes after a BING restore or copy, when you next try to boot the restored or copied partition, you get an error message from BING saying it cannot find the partition. Usually this is just because the Boot field of the boot menu item has been reset to blanks and needs to be reentered. This is very easy to correct. In the following example I will assume WIN7 is the partition you just restored and it is also identified as "WIN7" in the boot menu. The corresponding boot item should be fixed as follows: * In "BootIt NG" (the BING desktop screen), select Boot Edit. * In "Boot Menu", select the boot item identified by "WIN7". * In "Boot Menu", select Edit. * In "Edit Menu Item", select WIN7 in the dropdown for the Boot field. * Select OK twice to get back to the "BootIt NG" screen. * In "BootIt NG", select Resume. * In "Boot Menu", select the partition to boot; select Boot. +--------------------------------+ | Backing Up WIN7 to DVDs or CDs | +--------------------------------+ 1) Boot the PC and press the space bar or down arrow before the BING timer elapses. 2) In "Boot Menu", select Maintenance. 3) In "BootIt NG", select Partition Work. 4) In "Work with Partitions" in the "Partitions" section, select the source partition, WIN7, the partition to be backed up. (Select TEST if instead you are backing up the TEST partition.) 5) In "Work with Partitions" in the "Actions" section, select Image. 6) In "Image", select Create Image and OK. This message should then appear at the bottom of the window: "* Paste Pending for Image Create *". 7) In "Work with Partitions" in the "Hard Drives" section, select the destination drive, CDz. 8) In "Work with Partitions", choose the destination RW drive. 9) In "Work with Partitions" in the "Actions" section, select Paste, which is no longer grayed out after the destination has been chosen. 10) In "Image", select Optimal for Write Speed, then OK. 11) In "Image", leave Byte-for-Byte checked and select Yes. 12) When prompted, insert a disc and select OK. For a multi-disc backup, you will be prompted when a subsequent disc change is required. 13) The backup begins. If the "Completion Alarm" setting is checked, a chirping alarm will sound when a disc change is required or the backup operation completes. 14) When the operation completes successfully, exit and boot as follows: * In "Image", select OK. * In "Work with Partitions", select Close. * In "BootIt NG", select Resume. * In "Boot Menu", select the partition to boot; select Boot. +--------------------------------------+ | Backing Up WIN7 to a Hard Drive File | +--------------------------------------+ The following assumes the destination image file is to be on hard drive HD 0 in the VOL-K partition in the BING-BU directory. For a different location, adjust the values in the procedure below. 1) Boot the PC and press the space bar or down arrow before the BING timer elapses. 2) In "Boot Menu", select Maintenance. 3) In "BootIt NG", select Partition Work. 4) In "Work with Partitions" in the "Partitions" section, select the source partition, WIN7, the partition to be backed up.
