* *** NEXTDOOR DRAFT - 17 Jun 2019 14:22:51 - JKNAUTH Ting Gigabit Fiber Network: Possible Email Address Problem Ting is constructing a gigabit (very high speed) fiber network in our area (see links below). If you want to connect to that network, you might have an email address problem. For example, if you are currently connected to the internet thru Spectrum *AND* you have nc.rr.com as the last part of your email address, that address will be deleted if you cancel the internet part of your Spectrum account, e.g., by switching to Ting. In general, people with an email address supplied by their current "internet access provider" (Spectrum, AT&T, CenturyLink, etc.) will likely lose that address if they change their access provider, e.g., by switching to Ting. Those people will need to get a new email address from somewhere else, as described below. However, if your address did NOT come from your access provider, e.g., you use something like a Gmail address, you probably will have no problems using your current email address on Ting. POTENTIAL HEADACHES: If you must get a new email address, once it is operational you will need to notify people and organizations about your address change. This can be a *VERY BIG* deal, involving much work with many notifications. How big depends on how widely you have distributed your old email address and to whom. Probably not all the notifications will go smoothly, especially with getting organizations to properly switch to your new address. For my address change, only about 75% of the well over 100 organizations I notified got everything right the first time. Some, including Fortune 100 companies, utilities, and large charities, took a long time and required much interaction with their support people before things worked properly. Don't assume this change can be completed quickly and don't let your old address expire before you are done. You will want to choose your new address carefully because you definitely will NOT want to go thru all this again any time soon. For some detailed considerations, including planning suggestions and a list of problems I encountered, see http://jgkhome.name/PC_Info/Making_an_Email_Address_Change.htm POTENTIAL GOOD NEWS: If your email address was NOT supplied by the company thru which you connect to the internet, your old address should still work if you switch to Ting. For example, Gmail, Yahoo, and Hotmail (now Outlook) email addresses should still work as they did before. If you DO need to change your current address in order to switch to Ting, then Gmail, etc. are possible suppliers for your new address. You can do a Google search for to get some ideas. Note that Ting itself does not supply email addresses. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Recent (5/22/19) Ting news update: https://ting.com/blog/internet/wakeforest/announcing-phase-2-fiber-network/ The above Phase 2 post shows Ting has now updated their *Phase 1* construction area to include Heritage South. This is good news for Heritage South since previously Phase 1 was only north of Rogers Road. Apparently enough people in Heritage South signed up via the $9.00 pre-order bargain to have Ting expand their Phase 1 plan.
