* *** 2015_MORE_COMMENTS_ON_2015-08-06_POCKET_GUIDE TXT - 14 Aug 2015 14:09:17 - JKNAUTH The purge of "M100" done in the Precinct Official Manual was not done in the Quick Guides and Pocket Guide. "M100" shows up in a few places in the "All Officials" and "Voter Assistance" QGs (you can scan for those). It shows up in many places in the PG. The "M100"s in the QGs could be removed, as well as all those in most pages of the PG. However the "Tabulator Troubleshooting" page of the PG is hardware specific, so it is probably appropriate to leave "M100" there. 8/6/15 Chief Judge Pocket Guide ------ ----- ----- ------ ----- Page 6: Fifth major checkbox: laptops -> laptop Does any polling place get more than one? Page 7: Eleventh major checkbox: "Keep the key lanyard around your neck at all times" -> "Keep the key lanyard around your neck at all times when you are not using the keys" (This is to prevent choking the CJ after he/she has inserted the key in the M100 to open/close the polls and is then trying to complete the rest of those procedures.) Page 9: Bottom of page: 919-856-5955 -> (919) 856-5955 Page 11: Third checkbox in bottom box: into the AutoMARK -> into the AutoMARK (NOT the Tabulator) As documented in some of my old comments and a postmortem, I once put the key in the wrong device. The warning in the old CJ QG was added to try to prevent such a mistake during the Closing Polls hectic activity. Page 11: Have a new section box with the heading: "Emergency Bin:" with these checkboxes: * Use the blue key to open the Emergency bin * If the Emergency Bin is not empty - Announce ... (current text) - Remove the ballots from the Emergency Bin - Insert ... (current text) > If any ... (current text) > If the ... (current text) - Record ... (current text) My concern with the way it is written now in the PG is that there is no explicit opening of the bin to check whether there are any ballots. Instead it seems to allow the officials to depend on their memories -- not a good thing to depend on. Page 12: First minor bullet: open front panel -> open the front panel Page 12: Shouldn't the "Press the button under "CLOSE POLLS" be a major checkbox? It looks misaligned. Page 13: Tape #2, fourth checkbox: in a mailbox -> in a USPS dropbox (or whatever the official term is nowadays) In the past we were warned that putting the purple envelope in just any mailbox, e.g., your own personal mailbox at home, was a definite no no. (And I agree. If anyone disagrees, check the recent news stories about thefts from home mailboxes. Mine in Raleigh was robbed years ago, as were those of many of my neighbors.) Has the BOE policy changed? If the PG is now in error, this should be mentioned in the CJ class. Page 15: "To complete your Reconciliation Form you will need the following items:" -> "Complete your Reconciliation Form. You will need the following items:" My concern is that the current wording is just an informative statement. It needs to be a directive to get the completion done here. Note that nowhere in the rest of the PG is the filling out of the form mentioned, just placing the signed form in the blue plastic bag. Page 15: My 8/13/15 comments missed some places where "plastic" should be inserted before "bag" or "bags". Just scan and fix the lot. Jeff Knauth
