* *** COMMENTS_ON_2025_BASIC_MODULE TXT - 15 Sep 2025 23:15:24 - JGKNAUTH Comments on 2025 Basic Module -------- -- ---- ----- ------ Thanks for making the Basic module available to me. I really think any CJ should be able to easily see what the other Officials are being told to do. Below are my comments, many of which are just slide number updates of the comments I made on the 2024 Basic module: https://jgkhome.name/WakeBOE/OLD_COMMENTS/Comments_on_11-5-24_Basic_Module.txt I also now used the Menu section titles to make things easier to find. 1) Election and General Information > Election Timeline > Hear from the Chief Judge (slide 21): This almost encourages CJs to wait until two weeks before Election Day before contacting the POs. That's definitely not good. Anyway, here the POs should be warned to frequently check their spam folders for emails from their Chief Judge, whose name and email address they very well might not know -- as commented on in detail in https://jgkhome.name/WakeBOE/TEMPORARY/Actions_Summary.htm#reminder 2) Registration Table > Updates to the ATV (slide 51): Says the Help Line will tell the RT Official to mark the pink "T". It's the Help Table Official who tells the RT Official to do this. Right? Or the HT Official may do the actual marking, since the RT Official at this time may well be busy working with a voter using a different pollbook. 3) Registration Table> (many slides): As I have often documented in detail elsewhere, there are problems in the RT flowchart and the resulting flow. For example, see https://jgkhome.name/WakeBOE/Comments_on_2025-09-10_Documents.txt 4) Ballot Table > Issuing an ExpressVote Ballot (slide 128): For the text filled in by the Official, that funky font may be artistic, but it's hard to read. 5) Voter Assistance > Ballot Jams (slide 158): The jam image shown does not say whether the ballot has been counted or not. (Note the bold text about this.) Is this an old image? The "Tabulator Error Message Video", "Ballot Jams" section" does show the correct image. 6) Voter Assistance > Tabulator Error Message Video: As I have commented in previous years for this and previous similar videos, telling the voter to watch for the count to change is a *VERY BAD* thing to do. In those past comments I described an experience I had with a voter (using the old M100 Tabulator) who missed seeing the count change and caused a lot of problems, insisting her vote had not been counted even though it had been counted, as was subsequently verified. Even on the current DS200 Tabulator that count change is easy to miss. However the current Tabulator has very good messages for ballot acceptance vs problem notices. That's what voters should watch for and is definitely what I tell my Officials to instruct voters to watch for. This video should be brought up-to-date. 7) Electronics (slide 162): Are voters allowed to have their phones out doing research while standing in the RT line in the voting enclosure? It is absolutely impossible to detect if they are also taking pictures. Shouldn't such smart phone research be restricted to just when the voter is in the voting booth? If I see someone using a smartphone, I tell them to put it away until they get in the booth. 8) Curbside Video (slide 164): I sure wish someone would chop off the first 20+ seconds of the curbside video. The video should focus on the important stuff, which is complicated and you need to get to it ASAP. 9) Closing the Polls > Emptying Counted Ballots Bin Continued (slide 180): The video ends and then for the next minute there is a black screen as the progress bar slider slowly creeps to the right. That might lead to some confusion, but sounds like a fixable problem. As noted in past years, this emptying scenario is pretty unrealistic. For almost every precinct there will be far more ballots to deal with than shown in the video, e.g., to search thru for ExpressVote ballots. 10) General comment: Many of the Tabulator images use the special "Protected Count" configuration, which is not what is used at polling places. They also don't show the "magic" button. Note that the button is finally shown on the Welcome screen in the PO website's "Opening and Closing the Polls" video. I guess because this module was provided outside the normal training system, the normal "EXIT THE COURSE" does not work. It just grays out. Then if you try to restart the module, it immediately goes right back to the Final Reminders screen. I wanted to replay the module to make sure my notes were right. I finally figured out a way to do the replay by executing the module and then just opening up the Menu sidebar while on the Final Reminders screen. I then could click on whatever I wanted to see. The Menu facility is good. Jeff
