* *** NEXTDOOR_POSTS_FOR_2020-03-03 TXT - 27 Feb 2020 15:06:25 - JKNAUTH (Nextdoor post done on 1/21/20 for Precincts 19-19 and 19-18) ======================================================================== Primary election day, 3/3/2020, aka Super Tuesday, is only six weeks away. This post is mainly for Precinct 19-19 and 19-18 voters, but the information also applies for other nearby precincts. Updating Your Voter Registration Data -------- ---- ----- ------------ ---- You still have time to register or to update your current registration data, e.g., your residence address and party affiliation. See http://www.wakegov.com/elections/Pages/default.aspx for some deadline information. Because this is a partisan primary election, your party affiliation is very important. You cannot change that affiliation on election day in hopes of getting a different ballot style on that day. Make sure NOW that your registered affiliation is appropriate to get your desired ballot style on election day. No Photo ID Required for This Election -- ----- -- -------- --- ---- -------- In keeping with a recent court decision, photo IDs will NOT be required in this election. The typical voting process will still be as it has been for the past several elections -- no photo ID required. Website Links for Election Information ------- ----- --- -------- ----------- http://www.wakegov.com/elections/info/Pages/nextelection.aspx has links to many helpful pages for this election, e.g., for checking/changing your registration information (residence address, party affiliation, jurisdictions, precinct polling place, etc.), viewing the candidates as well as the sample ballots for your precinct, learning the concepts behind primary elections, finding early voting sites for this election, seeing how to vote absentee, and more. Viewing Sample Ballots ------- ------ ------- Some ballot styles will list many races in this election and some ballot styles will have many names in a particular race. You need to be familiar with your ballot before you go in to vote so you can fill it out quickly and easily. You don't want to mess up a ballot and then have to fill out another one from scratch. Fortunately, to help you get ready, the WCBOE website listed above lets you easily view samples of the ballot(s) you are eligible to receive. You can print, mark up, and take such a paper sample ballot to your polling place to help you easily fill out your real ballot. Also, http://jgkhome.name/WakeBOE/19-19.htm clarifies which sample ballot styles each voter will see, e.g., for partisan vs. Unaffiliated voters, along with special considerations for the Green and Constitution Parties. Changed Congressional Districts: *YOU* ARE AFFECTED! ------- ------------- ---------- ----- --- --------- VERY IMPORTANT: If you haven't been closely following the redistricting news over the last many months, you may be surprised to learn that our Wake Forest and Rolesville precincts will be in a new Congressional District in 2021. In the 3/3/2020 primary you will be selecting party candidates, one of whom will be elected in November and sworn in on 1/3/2021 as our new US Representative for our new Congressional District. We will then be in District 4, no longer in District 2. In contrast, our neighbors a few miles to the south will be in District 2, no longer in District 4. Note that the Precinct 19-19 and 19-18 polling places (Sanford Creek Elementary School and Jones Dairy Elementary School respectively) have *NOT* been changed by any of this. They are still the same as they have been since the Precinct 19-10 division in 2017. Your online registration data (see above) lists your polling place, which is most likely the same as it has been since 2017, unless you moved. Although your current, about to become obsolete, voter card still lists Congressional District 2, your online registration data (see the WCBOE website mentioned above) has already been updated to list Congressional District 4 in preparation for the 3/3/2020 election. Similarly your sample ballots have the correct information for the new District 4 you will become part of in 2021 and whose potential Representative you will be voting for on 3/3/2020. Because of the Congressional redistricting you will be seeing new names on your ballot. Please be prepared. See the WCBOE website mentioned above or http://jgkhome.name/WakeBOE/19-19.htm for how to view sample ballots specific for you. Then you won't be surprised on election day. For some informative maps on the new Congressional Districts, see http://msweb03.co.wake.nc.us/bordelec/downloads/maps/2019/CongressionalDistrict2019.pdf and https://www.ncleg.gov/Redistricting/DistrictMapViewer . Of course you shouldn't get either too overjoyed or too underjoyed by the latest new Congressional Districts. Recall that 2020 is a census year, so the state will get redistricted *AT LEAST* one more time before the 2022 Congressional elections. Please Wait at the Tabulator To See Your Ballot's Status ------ ---- -- --- --------- -- --- ---- -------- ------ Our new Tabulator model worked well in the last election, its debut. However there is one thing we want to emphasize to voters: After entering your ballot into the Tabulator slot, PLEASE WAIT the few seconds until the display shows whether the ballot was accepted or rejected. If you don't wait and just hurry out the door, we have to try to chase you down if the Tabulator has detected an error after you ran, e.g., if you marked too many entries in one or more races. Until we bring you back to say how you want to proceed, no one else can cast their ballot. The voter line is held up until you are available to say whether you want the Tabulator to ignore the extra-marked race(s) or instead have us give you a new ballot to fill out. All this goes much faster if we don't have to chase you. If we can't catch you, we have no choice but to tell the Tabulator to ignore all the extra-marked race(s) on your ballot so it can be read in, thus allowing the other (patiently waiting) voters to now cast their ballots. Even worse, your whole ballot may be invalid if you mismarked your ballot using X's, or checkmarks, or smiley faces, or red ink, or something else, instead of just filling out the ovals with the supplied black pens, per the instructions. Such an invalid ballot can cause a real mess if you can't be chased down. Please just wait to see your ballot's status. Specifics for the Precinct 19-19 Polling Place --------- --- --- -------- ----- ------- ----- All the above general information applies not only to Precinct 19-19, but also to precincts nearby, e.g., 19-18. Some information specific to the 19-19 polling place is in http://jgkhome.name/WakeBOE/19-19.htm, e.g., maps, Sanford Creek Elementary School "carpool" times to avoid, traffic flows, parking considerations (standard lot, curbside area, alternate lots), etc. Jeff Knauth Chief Judge for Precinct 19-19 ######################################################################## (Nextdoor post done on 2/27/20 for Precinct 19-19) Election Information for Precinct 19-19 ======== =========== === ======== ===== If you are seeing this, you are likely in Voting Precinct 19-19.
